Dispute dims power's big day
Article Abstract:
The UK government claims that the opening up of the domestic gas and electricity markets to full competition has been a success, even though only a small number of electricity customers have switched supplier so far and poorer consumers have benefited least. There has been particular controversy over the fact that electricity companies are putting pressure on the government to be permitted to pass on their full costs to customers, which would lead to 270 million pounds sterling being added to household bills in 2000. It is widely anticipated that a small number of powerful suppliers will emerge.
