Does life begin at conception?
Article Abstract:
Almost 4,000 frozen embryos out of a stock of 60,000 are due to be destroyed in August 1996. UK law requires that, after five years storage, frozen embryos should be destroyed if they are not donated or the owners do not request an extension. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, which has not been able to locate the parents of 900 embryos, does not believe it acceptable to donate the embryos to other couples without the permission of those parents. Life, UK charity which is pro-life, will hold a press conference in August 1996, and the Universe, Catholic newspaper, and The Vatican have called for married couples to adopt embryos.

Quit smoking? I could do it with my eyes shut ...
Article Abstract:
Many people who wish to give up smoking turn to hypnotherapy, especially as some of the estimated 4,000 to 5,000 hypnotherapists in the UK claim success in a single session. The hypnotherapist will not put the client into a deep trance, but will induce a state of extreme relaxation. In this state, it is possible to plant suggestions in the client's subconscious, indicating the negative aspects of smoking and the positive aspects of not smoking. Hypnotherapy is widely seen as the most effective way of giving up smoking, although its success rate is probably less than half.

A Deputy Prime Minister should watch the company he keeps
Article Abstract:
The UK government has tried extremely hard to present itself as being young and in touch with modern tastes. In particular, it has sought to gain the backing of pop stars. However, it has failed to take into account that youth culture can often be rebellious and unpredictable, as shown in the fact that Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott had water thrown over him by alternative band Chumbawamba at the 1998 Brit Awards. Trying to appear close to the pop industry will inevitably reflect badly on both politicians and pop stars.
