Does machismo face death in the bullring?
Article Abstract:
Spanish feminism has been given a considerable boost by Cristina Sanchez, who has become the first woman in Europe to gain the fight to bullfight as a fully fledged matador. The Spanish feminist movement is relatively young, but Spanish women now feel that they can enter areas traditionally dominated by men. The new Spanish conservative government has four female ministers, and the Spanish state broadcasting company is also headed by a woman. However, many traditionalists feel that bullfighting can never be a suitable activity for a woman.

Long-distance runner on his last lap
Article Abstract:
Spanish prime minister Felipe Gonzalez has come to be associated with the country's move towards democracy and away from the problems of the Franco era. He enjoyed many successes in the 1980s, but his popularity has declined since Spain started experiencing economic difficulties and being badly damaged by corruption. There is now a widespread feeling that his time as the country's leader is coming to an end, but those closest to him believe that he will never voluntarily leave office.

Spain gets set to turn the tortilla again
Article Abstract:
Spain has not had a democratic political system for very long, but the campaigning for the forthcoming elections shows that it has settled down to a mature, stable approach to politics. The Socialist government, which has been in power for more than 13 years, will probably be replaced by a conservative administration, but ordinary Spaniards accept this as a normal part of a democratic system, and there has been none of the bitter struggling which used to characterise Spanish politics.
