Dogfight in the North
Article Abstract:
Liverpool, north-west England, planned an extension to the Speke airport in Feb 1993 and Manchester airport applied for a second runway in Jul 1993. In 1992 Manchester had 11.6 million passengers, 25 times more than Liverpool. Manchester's plans would accommodate 30 million passengers a year. Liverpool's plans would increase capacity from 467,000 passengers a year to 9 million. Manchester made 43 million pounds sterling in 1992 compared to Liverpool's loss of 750,000 pounds sterling. It's shake, rattle and no new rolling stock
Article Abstract:
British Rail still uses extremely old rolling stock on many of its rural lines, and this has led to many trains breaking down. However, trains on the long-distance regional network are generally much newer. No new rolling stock has been ordered in 1995, for the first time in the history of the company, and this will lead to the closure of the former British Rail coachworks in York, which is now managed by a consortium including ABB and Trafalgar House.

BR Turbo trains slide 'out of control.'
Article Abstract:
It has been revealed that there have been a number of incidents in which some British Rail trains have failed to stop and skidded out of control for considerable distances. Most problems have been with the fleet of 80 Turbo trains which run on the Chiltern and Thames line. Zonal directors are now being urged to reverse the policy of cutting costs by reducing tree felling work, as problems can be made worse by leaves on the track.
