Article Abstract:

A recent newspaper report has revealed that the Porton Down defence research establishment used anaesthetised pigs to test body armour and also used monkeys in wound tests. In 1993, three MoD establishments which conduct animal experiments performed a total of 6,796 procedures on animals. They are subject to regulation under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, and are inspected and licensed by the Home Office. In 1993, the number of animal experiments undertaken rose by around 50% from 1992, and a particular increase was seen at Porton Down.

Britain: skinflint of space

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency (ESA) is trying to attract funding from its 14 member states to develop a new strategy for space science, but the UK government has so far failed to invest to any significant level in space science. If it does not do so quickly, astronomers in the UK will miss out on the chance to become involved in the gamma ray telescope, as they will be unable to contribute the same level of funds as their European counterparts. The UK's participation in future space missions may also be very negatively affected.
