Dole queues will carry on growing, Labour warns
Article Abstract:
The shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown responded to Chancellor Norman Lamont's autumn statement. Mr Brown said Mr Lamont had not admitted his mistakes and failed to offer an economic strategy for the future. Unemployment would continue to increase and Mr Lamont's investment incentives had previously been considered 'phoney measures.' Liberal Democrat Alan Beith said Mr Lamont was keeping existing capital spending the same rather than injecting a significant expansion. Backbenchers congratulated Mr Lamont.

The curious case of the royal bedroom
Article Abstract:
Home secretary Michael Howard has come under considerable pressure from the Labour party to resign following accusations that he tried to persuade Derek Lewis, the former director-general of the Prison Service, to remove the governor of Parkhurst prison. He is determined not to resign over this issue, and is supported in this by prime minister John Major. He has attacked the Labour party for trying to gain political advantage from the difficulties experienced by the Prison Service.
