Drawing up the battle lines
Article Abstract:
The eighteenth-century political cartoonist James Gillray, renowned as a notorious and offensive satirist, is the subject of Guy Jenkin's first play, Fighting for the Dunghill. The period detail is updated, substituting poll tax for window tax and Saddam Hussein for Napoleon. Gillray was born in 1756 and brought up in an evangelical sect that believed firmly in the depravity of mankind. Gillray changed his attitude on the French revolution from left wing to right wing supposedly to earn a nice annual pension from the Tories. It is believed that he bitterly regretted selling himself in this way and that it led to his suspected suicide in 1815.
