Dreams fade in face of Kuwait's siege mentality
Article Abstract:
The threat of military action against Iraq seems to have had little impact so far in Kuwait City, where there has been extensive rebuilding work since the early 1990s. In contrast, the results of the Gulf War are still clearly visible in the region north of Mutla Ridge, where oil plays a key role in the local economy. The country's traditional siege mentality seems to have grown stronger since 1991, and Kuwait is very sensitive about having to pay foreigners to undertake the tasks its own people cannot fulfill.
