Unions seek cuts in working times
Article Abstract:
A 36-hour working week throughout Europe will be sought by the European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF) on 1 July 1998, equivalent to a 1,750-hour working year. The move by the EMF, which has 6mn members in the manufacturing sector, is designed to cut joblessness and create jobs and would lead to a cut in the working week from the 37-39 hours worked by the vast majority of UK manufacturing staff. The EMF will reveal its plans to firms across 30 countries, with four weeks' holiday per year at least and 100 hours overtime at most.
