Article Abstract:
Stage, film, opera and ballet designer Carl Toms attended Mansfield School of Art before serving in the Royal Ordnance Corps during the second world war. He then went to the Royal College of Art and subsequently trained under Margaret 'Percy' Harris at the Old Vic School in the late 1940s. He made models for a penthouse suite at the Dorchester Hotel in 1953, while also working with Oliver Messel on the design for a new ballet at the Royal Opera House. He was design consultant for the Investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1969.

Train workers who are off sick will face random visits by managers after illness rates doubled at the private rail firm, English, Welsh & Scottish. The rail freight operator is losing GB 7mn a year to the problem. Now any staff member who has taken more than five days off in the previous twelve months will be visited at home that day by a supervisor. If a visit is declined then no hours will be credited for the period.
