East Germany's fast track to sporting glory
Article Abstract:
Brigitte Berendonk and Werner Franke discovered East German documents showing plans to drug athletes to dominate the Olympics in Bad Saarow, a military hospital. The state used the Leipzig institute (FKS) to researchhormone drugs, the childbirth hormone oxytocin and vasopressin. Some athletes were unaware of drug administration and parents of teenagers had no opportunity to give consent. The steroids Oral Turinabol, STS 646 and testosterone were used. Future health damage is likely from these drugs. Some drugs were unlicensed and untested.

Meter misery in a parking maze
Article Abstract:
The London Borough of Camden has a new parking rule, forbidding parking on an out-of-order meter, which entraps non-local motorists frequently. The neighbouring London Borough of Westminster confuses drivers by condoning parking by broken meters. Observation revealed that traffic wardens failed to warn drivers of the new rule, people had problems understanding the notices on meters, and that policemen coordinated ticket giving with the arrival of towaway trucks.

The border war threatening to break out in Berwick: the campaign in Scotland will be dominated by talk of independence
Article Abstract:
Berwick-upon-Tweed is part of Northumberland, England, but once it was a Scottish burgh. The English took it by battle in 1481 but no treaty was signed. Scottish nationalists think its people should be asked if they wish to join Scotland, particularly if it becomes independent. Technically Berwick is a foreign possession like the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. It is a mixture of English and Scots.
