Two steps back to the kitchen
Article Abstract:
A Council of Europe conference on equality for women in Poland, held in March 1992 heard that the rejection of communism had included the loss of women's organisations and women's rights. Women were 45.4% of the workforce two years ago but now they comprise 52% of the unemployed. There is one job for every 14 men and one for every 40 women; over half the creches have closed. Politicians and the Catholic church encourage women to stay at home. The trade union Solidarity proposed a housewives' wage and in May 1990 voted for a ban on abortion without consulting women. A women's movement is beginning, based on 17 of the 50 women in the two houses of parliament, led by Barbara Labuda MP. They will act as consultants on proposed legislation.

Two heroes in transformation
Article Abstract:
President Vaclac Havel, a playwright and philosopher, led the revolution in Czechoslovakia and has been successful in his role since Dec 1989 but President Lech Walesa of Poland, an electrician, has poorly planned aims which have resulted in problems. Mr Walesa is a poor communicator and uses Mr Andrzej Drzycimski as a spokesman. Rumours risk undermining the presidency and the country's stability. Lack of experience, as with other central European leaders in the nineteen-nineties, creates pressure when dealing with difficult issues. Although Mr Havel is popular, most of his parliamentary proposals have been rejected.

A life devoted to pursuit of power
Article Abstract:
German Chancellor Helmut Kohl showed himself to be a natural leader from an early age. He is not a great speaker, he is not particularly intellectual and he lacks charisma. However, he has been able to hold power in Germany since 1982, retaining his position mainly through his great skills of conciliation and mediation. He has never had a political patron, and has built up power solely through trusting his own gut instincts.
