Cot death link to smoking parents

Article Abstract:

Evidence that babies whose parents smoke are at a higher risk of cot death has emerged from a Scandinavian study published in the UK Journal of Pediatrics. The study measured levels of nicotine in 45 children who had died suddenly in the Oslo region, Norway, and compared the levels between the cot death babies, and other children who had died from accidents or infections. Nine out of ten cot death babies had levels indicating significant exposure to nicotine, whereas levels were much lower in the other group. It is thought that exposure to nicotine depresses the body's reaction to a drop in oxygen and delays arousal from sleep. Parents are already advised not to smoke near their children, in order to help prevent asthma and other conditions.

Bugs resistant to antibiotics on the increase

Article Abstract:

UK doctors fear that certain patients may become impossible to treat because infections are becoming increasingly immune to antibiotics, with the salmonella typhimurium DT 104 strain resistant to seven antibiotics. The warning emerged in Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) figures which showed that the DT 104 strain results in 3,000 infections annually and that all but around 5% of isolates of the bacterium are not impacted by four drugs at least. The PHLS revealed too that the salmonella organism, which can cause abdominal pain, blood and stomach infection, is becoming resistant to other drugs, noting that the strains are thankfully not yet super virulent although there is concern they may become so eventually.
