Enigma and after
Article Abstract:
Composer Edward Elgar remained relatively unknown until 1899, when his 'Variations for Orchestra on an Original Theme (Enigma)' was first performed. This work was recognized almost straight away as being extremely significant. Its style is taken almost entirely from continental European composers, but remains very English. It is also notable for the fact that its technical brilliance is derived from the concerns of Elgar's everyday life. It is unique in Elgar's output.

The melody lingers on
Article Abstract:
Music is heard and remembered in many different ways by different people. Some find that a particular incident sparks off a memory of a piece of music which has not been heard for some time, while some experts believe that recalling musical states and structures helps to balance a person's life. For performers, memorising music is a much more physical process, while for composers musical themes may develop over a long period before they are actually written down.

Too young to die, too old to live
Article Abstract:
Radio 3 is paying considerable attention to the centenary of Paul Hindemith in 1995, making him 'Composer of the Week.' However, less attention is being paid to the fact that 1995 is also the 100th anniversary of the birth of Carl Orff and the 50th anniversary of the deaths of Bela Bartok and Anton Webern. Bartok died before he really became well known to the musical public, while Hindemith's reputation would have not been affected if he had died earlier.
