The summertime blues
Article Abstract:
Dartington summer school, England, was set up in the 1920s by two visionaries from the US. It is located in Devon, England, and has attracted a number of talented international musicians who have had a major impact on the companies that they have come from. Dartington involves both amateurs and professionals, and seeks to involve poorer people from areas such as Hackney and Brixton in London. Funds to pay for poorer people to attend Dartington have become scarce, despite the artistic excellence that it has achieved.

Songs in the key of valium
Article Abstract:
It has been known since ancient times that music can have healing powers, and music therapy has now become a very advanced procedure. One recent development is the Symbiosis instrumental trio, set up by former BBC sound engineer Clive Williamson. The trio has produced a relaxation tape, and this is being tested by hospital doctors assessing the ability of music to relieve pain. The tape brings together a range of pieces featuring flute, acoustic guitar, electronic keyboard, marimba and the human voice.

A destroyer of myths
Article Abstract:
Pianist Charles Rosen does not feel obliged to respect musical traditions, and often expresses strong views about the standard of work of even the most highly regarded composers. He firmly believes that some manuscripts are unreliable, and does not hesitate to use an early version of a well-known piece if this approach seems more appropriate. He often attacks musical myths, such as that of Schumann as the mad composer.
