Escobar prepares his last stand as the noose tightens
Article Abstract:
Mario Castano, right hand man to Pablo Escobar the Colombian drugs baron, has been killed by an eight man squad of soldiers and just Escobar and El Angelito remain to be captured or killed. Escobar realises that the authorities would rather have him dead than alive so he is trying to negotiate his surrender via a Catholic bishop. Escobar and nine of his associates walked out of La Catedral prison near Medellin in July 1992 where he had continued to run his drugs empire with installed computers, telephones, fax machines and similar equipment. He had been there since he surrendered in June 1991.

Rivals muscle in on Escobar drug empire
Article Abstract:
With Medellin cocaine organisation boss Pablo Escobar in hiding trying to evade death while negotiating his surrender, the rival Cali cartel has assumed the number one position in the world cocaine market. The income of this group is thought to be 44 million pounds sterling a day, 16 billion pounds sterling a year, five times the income of the Medellin group. The latter has used violence and intimidation whereas the Cali methods have involved a more sophisticated and businesslike infiltration procedure.

Escobar sets softer terms for surrender
Article Abstract:
Colombian drug baron Pablo Escobar offered to give himself up with Bishop of Bucaramanga Monsignor Dario Castrillon as his guarantor, provided he was held in Itagui prison near Medellin, Colombia, where his brother is detained. He required his own kitchen to prevent poisoning, a patio, a telephone and the safety of his family. President Cesar Gaviria insisted that he will not agree to any conditions. Prosecutor-General Gustavo de Greiff sent his family abroad after Escobar threatened to kill them.
