Second nature is seeing the world through a client's eyes
Article Abstract:
Many leading UK law firms are now seconding staff, usually assistant solicitors with two-eight years' post-qualification experience, to the industries in which their clients operate. A secondment gives the solicitor concerned a totally different outlook on work, gives a better understanding of the client's requirements and forges closer links with the client. In some cases, the client encourages a secondment in order to gain cut-price legal advice, but such as situation is generally avoided by most law firms.

An English lawyer abroad
Article Abstract:
English lawyer Jonathan Tatten graduated from an advanced management course at Harvard Business School. Few US lawyers take the 11-week course, which involves discussion of case studies rather than teaching. Mr Tatten learnt to take a broader view and realised that the UK legal profession depends on the economy. A law firm should be international and use information technology. Legal services should be exported. Smarter clients need quality services.
