Europe's most dangerous man?
Article Abstract:
New German Finance Minister Oskar Lafontaine has already attracted considerable controversy. He has stated that all European countries should bring their taxes and wages into line with Germany's, and believes that industry should be boosted by the injection of large amounts of public funds. He has already established a strong power base within the German government, and seems able to become involved in all areas of policy. His political career has been characterized by great certitude, interspersed with self-doubt prompted by significant defeats.

Kohl kept the peace while Wall tumbled
Article Abstract:
A book due to be published shortly by German chancellor Helmut Kohl reveals that he was always confident that Germany would become reunited within his lifetime. He undertook the process of reunification almost completely alone, with no support from Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. He regards reunification of Germany as his greatest achievement so far, but feels that the unification of European currencies in 1999 will be an even greater achievement.
