Shooting dangerous drugs
Article Abstract:
David Cronenberg has made a name for himself by making distinctively icy and stomach-churning horror movies based on writer William S. Burroughs' usage of disease, breakdown of society, invasive surgery, telepathy and drug addiction. Films such as Scanners, Videodrome, The Brood and Dead Ringers have drawn wide audiences. He has just produced his version of Burroughs' Naked Lunch. He says it would have cost $400 million to follow closely to the original and would have been universally banned. He has therefore had to tone it down, basing it more on The Fly where things and people fuse together.

Who is Chris Marker?
Article Abstract:
French filmmaker Chris Marker is notoriously elusive, and very little is known about him. Similarly, it is difficult to gain access to his films. He made his first feature in 1952, while his first widely acclaimed film, 'Lettre de Siberie,' was made in 1958. He is now 78, but he continues to be extremely involved in filmmaking. His most recent multi-media project is a CD-Rom called 'Immemory.' He has influenced many other filmmakers, particularly with respect to his political involvement.

Toback: the new confessions
Article Abstract:
Director and scriptwriter James Toback has always been greatly influenced by fiction and has sought extreme experience. In his films, the boundaries between fiction and autobiography have often been unclear. He has now calmed down a lot, and no longer uses drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. However, he still enjoys gambling, and there are still some remnants of his former extreme personality.
