'Even if I'm sad, I smile. And sometimes I sing.' (best selling black woman author Maya Angelou)
Article Abstract:
Maya Angelou, 60, is a poet, university teacher and the biggest seller among American black women authors but she has had a tough upbringing. She was raped at the age of eight by her mother's boyfriend who was lynched and beaten to death as a result. The episode made her unable to speak for five years and she was beaten by her relatives for this. The first of five autobiographical accounts I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings describes these incidents graphically. Her writing is always pleasant no matter how bad the events she is describing and she is a great supporter of social equality.

Opera without opera houses? Sing it loud
Article Abstract:
Some observers have expressed dismay at the news that the Royal Opera House and the Coliseum, the home of the English National Opera, are both likely to be closed for refurbishment in 1998. However, this could in fact have a positive outcome. The social aspect of opera will survive, as audiences can move to Glyndebourne. There are already many opportunities to hear opera in non-traditional venues, and the closure of the opera houses may be a good opportunity to give opera education departments the necessary funds to take opera out to new audiences.

Girls can be Tigers, too
Article Abstract:
Twickenham Rugby Football Club has a junior section of 90 children aged from six to 12 and the recent introduction of new safety rules for tackling means that girls can play and that size and strength are of minimal importance. This junior organisation, called The Twickenham Tigers, is run by Tom and Sandra Moses, their daughter Laura, 10, having been playing for the team for four years. The senior club donated 600 pounds sterling for equipment to The Tigers and the playing of the game by girls is increasing throughout the country.
