Article Abstract:

There is considerable tension between France and Germany over agricultural policy. These two countries have established a tradition of deciding the broad direction of European Union policy in advance, but they are likely to come into conflict at the forthcoming informal one-day European Union summit at which the reform of the common agricultural policy will be discussed. France takes one-fifth of all European Union farm spending, and Germany is now pressing France to accept that it must make real concessions.

Exotic dancer and courtesan Margaretha Geetruida Zelle-McLeod, known by her stage name Mata Hari, was executed in Oct 1917 after being convicted of passing military secrets to the Germans. Documents presented at her trial, now to be published for the first time, suggest that she was innocent.

Chirac plea for release of reporter accused of spying

Article Abstract:

French President Jacques Chirac has appealed to Afghanistan's Taliban regime to release journalist Michel Peyrard, who was arrested with two Pakistani journalists and accused of spying. The French authorities fear that the Taliban may try to make an example of the three men.
