Fast, cheap and out of control - but it sells

The documentary format in the US is shifting towards productions which are made quickly and inexpensively and appear slightly out of control. These documentaries are not of a very high quality technically, but are making money, with art houses showing considerable interest in them. Both non-fiction filmmakers and their viewers now regard poor image quality and strange on-camera behaviour by real people as indications of authenticity.

Murch's sound, Coppola's fury
Article Abstract:
Walter Murch, who designed the sound for 'Apocalypse Now,' states that he came to film-making relatively late, although he had been interested in sound from childhood. He recalls that Francis Ford Coppola wanted the sound to surround the audience.
