Fear is the key to naming and shaming
Article Abstract:
UK universities will be forced to take a more positive approach to whistle-blowing by the Public Interest Disclosure Bill, under which staff will be protected from being dismissed or penalized for exposing wrong-doing in the workplace. Until now, universities in both the UK and Europe have never placed great emphasis on the ethnical behaviour of their academic staff. University approaches to staff management will also have to change as a result of the extension of the Data Protection Act to cover manual records and a Freedom of Information Bill expected in summer 1998.

End of the great tuition fee scare
Article Abstract:
The introduction of a 1,000 tuition fee at UK universities in autumn 1998 has not, as some observers predicted, led to a decline in applications from the lower socio-economic groups. It appears that students' families are willing to make considerable financial sacrifices to ensure that their child has the best educational opportunities. However, there has been a fall in applications from adults over 21. This could be because of financial considerations or because the demand from adults for university education has become saturated.
