Interest rate cuts in the US have encouraged a rise in consumer spending in the short term. However, it is possible to identify serious problems with the overall effectiveness of monetary policy. Consumers will see the value of their assets fall while their ability to pay off their debts will diminish.

How Japan's savings could stave off recession
Article Abstract:
Trends in the value of the dollar are discussed. A significant dollar decline would indicate a shortage of savings to prop up the US economy and would therefore enhance the danger of recession. However, this could be avoided by finding a way of moving Japanese savings abroad.
