First steps in a long line of injustices
Article Abstract:
The Greiss tests for nitroglycerine by Dr Frank Skuse on Judith Ward in 1974 were invalid as an ordinary dye found in polishes and soap can be confused with it. Had this been realised sooner, 17 additional wrong convictions could have been avoided. Mr Douglas Higgs, head of the Woolwich laboratory in Nov 1973, should have known about test data recorded in Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment (RARDE) notebooks. Vital documents undisclosed at the time of trial were produced by the West Yorkshire police inquiry in 1991. The fact of Miss Ward's suicide attempt was not disclosed to the defence.

The slow, painful journey out of the prison time warp
Article Abstract:
Hugh Callaghan, one of the Birmingham six released in 1991 after 16 years, found it hard to adapt to life outside. Inside he was institutionalised with everything regimented and no need to think for himself. He took time to adjust to going anywhere alone and new technology amazed him. He appreciated the beauty of the countryside. He will be campaigning for other victims of a miscarriage of justice. Some of the others of the six have been divorced from their wives because such a long separation made them strangers to each other.

Murder trial sisters convicted by the media
Article Abstract:
Lord Justice McCowan cleared Michelle and Lisa Taylor of murdering Alison Shaughnessy at the Court of Appeal on Jun 12, 1993, after almost two years imprisonment. The media was blamed for exaggerating the relationship of Michelle Taylor and John Shaughnessy. The police suppressed evidence from Dr Michael Unsworth-White, who had said he had seen two girls at the Shaughnessy flat, but subsequently said one of them might have been black. He had inquired about a reward offered by Barclays Bank.
