Treaty opponents hail Denmark's 'historic blow.' (John Major's determination to continue with the Maastricht treaty)
Article Abstract:
The Danish referendum narrowly voted against the Maastricht treaty - 50.7% against, 49.3% for - but John Major is committed to implementing it. He does not believe in a referendum in a parliamentary democracy such as the UK. The parliamentary debate on the European Communities (Amendment) Bill to absorb the treaty into UK law would be postponed. Tony Benn, former Labour Cabinet Minister said the Danes had used their rights to prevent power transferring to unelected people and a commonwealth of Europe rather than a federeation might result.

Maastricht referendum vote still a possibility
Article Abstract:
The Committee Stage of the European Communities (Amendment) Bill began in Dec 1992 in the House of Commons with 370 proposed amendments and 40 proposed new clauses for the Treaty on European Union. Many Members of Parliament (MPs) complained that only those amendments not requiring a referendum had been chosen for debate. They hope to hold a vote on a referendum although the Bill does not refer to funds for one. Leader of the anti-Maastricht Friends of Bruges group Bill Cash dominated the debate.

Major 'driven to confidence factor.' (government votes on the Maastricht treaty and the Social Chapter)
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister John Major was unable to win a vote on the Social Chapter of the Maastricht Treaty except by tabling a motion of confidence in government policy. The original vote on the treaty was 324 to 316 against. The government cannot ratify the treaty unless it wins the motion required by the European Communities (Amendment) Act. All the other 11 EC member states have agreed to the Social Chapter, which is designed to improve health and safety and working conditions.
