Flawed research had the world on the run
Article Abstract:
US scientist John McLachlan has withdrawn research published in Jun 1996 which indicated that some common pesticides could activate the oestrogen receptor in human cells when working in combination. This would lead to a very large rise in the apparent levels of oestrogen in the environment, providing a cause for concern because chemicals which mimic oestrogen are known to cause birth defects and falling sperm counts. No other scientists were able to replicate the results of this research, and McLachlan now admits that there must have been a basic error in the design of the original experiment.

Time to go back to our roots
Article Abstract:
Many Britons are eating less meat, turning instead to vegetables. They are now beginning to expect that all types of vegetable should be available throughout the year, rather than just seasonally, and are demanding a very wide range of vegetables. Supermarkets are having to resort to imports to meet demand for certain vegetables, while in the UK growers supplying supermarkets are having to use very intensive farming methods. Organic farmers believe that mass-production could have disastrous consequences.

CANADA: BACTERIA FOUND IN PESTICIDE SPRAYS
Article Abstract:
Canadian researchers found that levels of bacteria responsible for food poisoning could multiply in pesticides sprayed on crops. Unwashed fruit and vegetables sprayed with pesticides could therefore pass on salmonella, listeria and E-coli. The experiment replicated the effect of a farmer using contaminated water to mix his sprays. The bacteria were found to thrive on one-third of the pesticides approved for use. The scientists recommended giving produce a good scrubbing with soap and water before use.
