For Labour and the country, there really is no alternative
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party will face considerable challenges in the period to its 1999 annual conference. Some of these will result from the outcome of the elections to the constituency section of the National Executive Committee (NEC) at the 1998 party conference, which appear to have produced four seats for left-wing critics and only two for people loyal to Prime Minister Tony Blair. Some Labour party members may begin to panic if the party's popularity slumps, but it is likely that Blair will ensure that he is not negatively affected by the outcome of the NEC elections.

How can the Tories deal with Tony now?
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party has never really been sure how it should deal with Labour party leader Tony Blair. The Labour party is deliberately emphasising that it will take a very cautious approach if it wins the forthcoming general election, and this means that the Conservatives have very little ammunition to use against it. Blair has liberated himself from the Labour party's past, while prime minister John Major seems to be still restricted by the Conservative party's past.
