For Rushdie, there is one last sigh
Article Abstract:
Author Salman Rushdie has now been living under a death threat from Iran for seven years, and has had to completely change his life in order to protect himself. However, the situation now seems to be easing slightly. Iran is not bowing to pressure to sign an agreement not to kill him or encourage others to kill him, but there are clear signs that he is no longer in any immediate danger. He still lives at a secret address and has two bodyguards, but is able to plan ahead and attend publicised events.

Army seizes power in Pakistan
Article Abstract:
A military coup has taken place in Pakistan following the dismissal of General Pervez Musharraf as chief of army staff. It is reported that the army has dismissed the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is now under house arrest. There had been considerable tension between the army and Sharif since summer 1999, when he bowed to pressure from the US and India and ordered the withdrawal of Pakistani troops from the Indian side of the ceasefire line in Kargil, Kashmir.

My plight is as bad as Rushdie's if he had been living in Iran
Article Abstract:
Bangladeshi feminist writer Taslima Nasreen wishes to remain in Bangladesh for the sake of her mother, who is suffering from cancer of the colon and has only a short time to live. However, she is aware that she may have to leave Bangladesh if Islamic fundamentalists continue to seek to carry out the fatwa against her. She was surprised by the strong reaction of Islamic fundamentalists when she returned to Bangladesh, as she had published nothing in Bangladesh for four years.
