For those who come after
Article Abstract:
It is vital that musical life constantly renews itself, according to pianist Maurizio Pollini. His own career has developed gradually and has gone through a number of different phases. Performers have a duty to put new music in their programmes, thus breaking down any prejudices which audiences may have. He has strong modernist views, but is currently immersed in the music of the past, having recently performed an entire Beethoven sonata cycle at the Carnegie Hall in New York and planning to repeat this performance in London, England.

The Goode life
Article Abstract:
Stage fright can be extremely difficult to overcome, according to pianist Richard Goode. He suffered very badly from stage fright for many years, and did not begin his solo career until he was almost 50. He is currently focusing on Brahms, having particular admiration for this composer's later pieces. He is most keen on the music of the 18th and 19th centuries, and has some problems coming to terms with contemporary music.

Five-finger exercise
Article Abstract:
Pianist Olli Mustonen has been criticised for his quick, nervy keyboard manner, especially the way in which he waves his arms around and moves his whole body. He strongly defends his approach to playing, pointing out that a pianist must be a magician, creating an illusion of unbroken sound. He believes that the pianist must use gravity to move from one note to the next, rather than the shortest route.
