France faces up to anxieties of the global society
Article Abstract:
There seems to be a strong atmosphere of self-doubt in France, which has traditionally been a very confident country. Indeed, some observers are even questioning whether the French state and being French are the right conditions for participation in the modern world. They feel that Europe is threatening French identity and sovereignty, and also point to high levels of immigration and growing divisions between fashionable city centres and city suburbs. France faces high unemployment, and there is also extensive racial tension.

Getting rich with the casino tribes
Article Abstract:
The economy of native American reservations in New Mexico is changing dramatically as a result of casinos. Gaming licences have now been obtained by 14 of the 19 Indian pueblos in New Mexico, although at present only 11 operate casinos. The casinos attract many visitors, mainly non-Indian, and use latest technology. Gambling has brought badly-needed money to Indian reservations, but is also beginning to have a negative impact, dividing rich tribes from poor.
