Secrets and lies keep families in the dark
Article Abstract:
The recent case of politician Clare Short, who has been reunited with the son she gave up for adoption as a baby, has highlighted the need for greater openness about adoption. Some children are never told that they are adopted, and can be very hurt if they later discover the truth by accident. However, renewing contact with a natural parent can also be a very traumatic experience, in contrast to that of Clare Short and her son. Being open about adoption makes it less likely that those involved will find it hard to address very sensitive issues.

Naming and shaming is futile
Article Abstract:
There is a growing shift in the UK towards believing that criminals should be publicly humiliated, as is already happening in the US. However, there is actually very little evidence that this approach is effective as a method of crime prevention. Furthermore, it is hard to introduce shame through legal means into a society where there is no longer any sense of shame. It has now become too easy for people to express their guilt and apologize, and often those who are made to feel ashamed are the victims of crime, not the perpetrators.

Reunited after 31 years
Article Abstract:
Giving a baby up for adoption is extremely traumatic, according to Labour MP Clare Short, who was recently reunited with her son Toby, who she gave up for adoption when he was six weeks old and is now 31. He had a happy childhood, but always thought about the possibility of finding his natural mother. They are both very pleased about their reunion, and feel that they will be able to talk openly about any negative feelings which may emerge later.
