Free speech and liberty are universal human rights
Article Abstract:
The visit of Chinese President Jiang Zemin to the UK has highlighted the way in which it is widely assumed that the love of liberty, freedom of conscience and the right to free association are solely Western values. It is very clear that political liberalization cannot be avoided indefinitely in China, and this impetus will come from within China itself, not as a result of Western pressure. It is vital that Western nations devise a foreign policy that takes account of the complexities and the pressures involved in governing China. However, this does not mean that concerns about free speech and liberty should be pushed aside.

Time to wake up to the false dawn of Africa's renaissance
Article Abstract:
It is clear that colonialism has played a significant role in creating the problems currently confronting Africa. However, it is also important to be aware that African leaders must take some responsibility for African problems. Media coverage of Africa has sometimes misrepresented developments there, but focusing on war and famine has not necessarily been wrong, as this is the fundamental reality of Africa. It is vital to be actively involved in Africa and to support the governments that are seeking to bring genuine improvements.
