French justice stops at the prison gates, say Arabs
Article Abstract:
Muslims being detained at the Fleury-Merogis prison in France claim that they are being exposed to severe maltreatment, discrimination, psychological pressure and religious persecution. They have made a number of specific claims about police corruption, including destroying or manufacturing evidence and the intimidation of detainees' families. They are particularly concerned about the actions of the Police Judiciaire, the main criminal investigation unit of the police. The authorities have made considerable efforts to cover up problems with the treatment of Muslim prisoners.

French go slow over a bridge too far
Article Abstract:
A viaduct planned to bypass the town of Millau, France, would complete the A75 motorway to the Languedoc-Roussillon region. However, there has been political and professional opposition to the scheme, and this may mean that the result of an open competition, which was won by Foster and Partners, is ignored. There is particular concern in France that the contract has been won by a foreign company.

Miserable French beset by angst and collective self-doubt
Article Abstract:
Many French people are depressed and are very unwilling to make changes in their lives, according to leading social analyst Gerard Mermet. There is a strong atmosphere of gloom across the country, and many people fear for the future. A key problem is a widespread lack of trust for politicians, especially prime minister Alain Juppe. There is also extensive mistrust of intellectuals.
