Michele Roberts won the WH Smith Literary Award of 10,000 pounds sterling for her novel 'Daughters of the House.' She read English at Oxford. She was brought up as a Catholic and once felt she had a vocation. Her books include references to the Catholic Church and mystical experiences. Roberts has published six novels, some short story collections and anthologies including 'Modern British Poetry' and 'The Faber Book of Sex,' a play and a television script written after work cleaning in a hospital.

The play's the thing, the pay's the problem

Actors who work in the theatre are generally very poorly paid. Rates are not negotiable, and experienced actors receive no more than those who have only recently started acting. Top television actors can earn a great deal of money , and this inevitably tempts actors to leave the theatre. They feel guilty about this, but cannot survive on the salary levels available in the theatre.
