A station you'll want to come home to
Article Abstract:
The Architecture and Design Group, a separate company within British Rail, designed the new station at Woolwich Arsenal and the Ashford International Station for the Channel Tunnel. The group, led by Nick Derbyshire, designed a pavilion style building for Woolwich Arsenal with a glass and steel beacon above the ticket hall. It has a tower reminiscent of Charles Holden's 1930s underground stations. Derbyshire and his colleague Alastair Lansley plan a two-storey station of glass bricks and steel beams, linked to the Network SouthEast new station by bridges and subways.

The things you've read are wrong
Article Abstract:
Since the Prince of Wales compared the new British Library building to 'an academy for secret police' its architect, Professor Sandy Wilson, has had no new work. Bad publicity has been common but it is believed that the finished building will be outstanding. It is one of the foremost centres for intellectual achievement in the world and the Great Hall is impressive enough for this. It is not due to be completed until 1996 and the total cost will be 450 million pounds sterling. The 13-acre site is at St Pancras, London.

Lipstick on the face of a gorilla
Article Abstract:
The Arts Council 'Per Cent For Art' campaign aimed for at least 1% of the capital cost of new buidings to be spent on art. This could become law as in Germany. Contemporary art can enhance buildings but poor quality work is of no benefit. Some public works of art are patronising. Over-manning and bad training creates undesirable work. Good modern architecture needs no art. Art cannot save bad architecture.
