Planning to retire? Get personal
Article Abstract:
Holders of personal pensions in the UK continue to enjoy generous tax concessions, and it therefore still worth considering investing in a personal pension. Before choosing a particular scheme, it is important to check its past performance over three, five, seven and even 10 years. Attention must also be given to charges, which can be very high. The best pensions are those where charges over the product's lifetime are no more than around 1% a year and where investors are not penalized in the early years.

Small investors keep their fingers crossed amid the turmoil(reaction of United Kingdom private investors to stock price falls in Oct 1997)
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom private investors sought to sell as stock prices dropped on Oct 28 1997, yet they returned to the market again that day to buy as prices rose again. For some small investors the falls represented buying opportunities. Investors with pension funds invested in stocks should not be affected because these are long-term investments. Those investors near retirement should move out of equities into bonds during their last years to prevent their funds being affected by stock price drops.
