Prisoners trapped in the war that time forgot
Article Abstract:
There are 2,000 Moroccan army captives held in Polisario camps in Algeria. Some of the 500 Moroccan prisoners at the walled village camp in south-west Algeria have been held for 21 years, and have very little contact with their families. Polisario officials claim that the prisoners are well treated, and point out that their situation is much better than that of the 140,000 Saharawi refugees who are currently living in desert camps around Tindouf, Algeria. The Polisario 'president' recently promised to release at least 85 prisoners.

UN dove brings hope to desert's lost tribe
Article Abstract:
Former US Secretary of State James Baker is seeking to bring an end to the occupation by Morocco of the western Sahara, a situation which has persisted since 1975. In his role as special envoy to the UN Secretary-General, he has visited some of the 140,000 Saharawis who were driven by Morocco out of the western Sahara into Algeria. The Polisario guerrillas who have been fighting for the Saharawis' cause are seeking an independent state in western Sahara, but Morocco continues to offer only limited sovereignty.

Becalmed on the Sahara's ocean of heat: the refugees dreaming of a homeland
Article Abstract:
The future of the Saharawi people, who come originally from the Western Sahara remains very uncertain. They number no more than 200,000, and are currently living in refugee camps in Algeria or under Moroccan occupation in Western Sahara. Most live in extremely difficult conditions, and their health is poor. They yearn for a return to an independent Arab Democratic Saharan Republic, but at present this seems very unlikely.
