Furious Scott takes on Tory 'smear campaign.' (political impact of Scott report into arms-for-Iraq affair)
Article Abstract:
Sir Richard Scott has been forced to strongly defend his extensive report into the arms-for-Iraq scandal, and prime minister John Major has been placed in an embarrassing situation following the revelation that Scott was put under pressure to allow ministers to have advance copies. The Labour party claims that former foreign secretaries Douglas Hurd and Lord Howe have made deliberate attempts to undermine the inquiry, which has taken three years to complete. The prime minister has promised to give careful consideration to any recommendations made by the report.
