Gap shorts cost 28 pounds sterling, but the hard labour of women who made them costs just 20p
Article Abstract:
Workers at sweatshops in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, earn a starting wage of 5 pounds sterling a week, rising to 6.50 pounds sterling after training, below the Cambodian poverty line of 11 pounds sterling a week. In contrast, the clothes they make sell at high prices in the UK. They live in very poor accommodation, and frequently work extremely long hours. There are now at least 180 garment factories in Cambodia, providing work for 168,000 people who would otherwise be trying to earn a living in the countryside.
