Mapping the world in 3-D
Article Abstract:
The European Space Agency's (ESA) European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-1), launched in Jul 1991, has been very successful, sending many radar images covering almost the whole of the planet. It is now to be replaced with a second Earth observation satellite, which will undertake radar observations until 1998. This will become operational in Jul 1995, and will run in parallel with ERS-1 for nine months, allowing two different views to be produced of the same area, thus giving a 3-D picture.

Ocean colour seen - from the sky
Article Abstract:
The SeaStar remote sensing satellite, which is to be launched on Aug 1, 1997, will be devoted to the study of ocean colour. This satellite, which has been built by Orbital Sciences Corp, will use Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor technology which can analyze light reflected from the oceans at eight wavelengths in the visible and near-infrared spectrum. It is hoped that it will allow scientists to gain a valuable insight into the changing patterns of microscopic marine life.
