General Grade's trench war
Article Abstract:
Recent criticism by Steve Morrison, managing director of LWT, that Channel 4 director Michael Grade had abandoned the channel's public service role is the latest clash in a long-running battle between Channel 4 and ITV over funding. Channel 4 believes that the funding formula which obliges it to pay half of all revenues over a certain level to ITV companies should now be abandoned. It is certainly true that Grade has changed the nature of Channel 4, having made its output much less obscure and more commercial. However, it is still a long way from resembling ITV.

An empty pot at the rainbow's end
Article Abstract:
A number of leading figures have expressed a dislike for D.H. Lawrence and his works, but this dislike in itself is in some ways a tribute to his powers. Expressions of dislike are inevitably linked with concessions to his genius and references to the fact that he seems to rise above criticism. However, there remain a number of undeniably negative points about Lawrence, including his reliance on fierce assertion and his lack of imaginative capacity to see himself in a comic light.

How I became a centurion of truth
Article Abstract:
UK journalists were in an unusually privileged position with respect to claims that the son of a leading Cabinet minister had been accused of drug dealing. Journalists are usually social outcasts, but were in great demand before it became public knowledge that the Cabinet minister concerned was Home Secretary Jack Straw. This case has served to clearly highlight the problems associated with the government's policy on soft drugs.
