Professor Frederick Rimmer
Article Abstract:
Composer, musician and teacher Frederick Rimmer commanded a rifle company during the second world war, and subsequently devoted his life to music. He studied at Cambridge University, England, and Durham University, England, and in 1951 was appointed Cramb Lecturer in Music at Glasgow University, Scotland. In 1966 he succeeded Professor Robin Orr to the Gardiner Chair of Music, and held this position until his retirement in 1980. He was an inspirational teacher, and was also very involved in the University Choral Society.

Anatol Vieru
Article Abstract:
Anatol Vieru was a composer who grew up in Romania, and Romanian folk songs were among his first influences. He studied at Bucharest Conservatory and then at Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Moscow, Russia. He won a number of prizes, including the Serge Koussevitzky Prize, at Washington. His music was seen as combining the traditional with the avant garde. He wrote four operas and six symphonies, as well as chamber music. He also worked as a conductor and as a teacher.
