George Lloyd
Article Abstract:
Composer George Lloyd began composing at the age of 10, taking lessons in counterpoint from C.H. Kitson and composition lessons from Harry Farjeon. He gained a great understanding of the Italian operatic method from his father, and was greatly influenced by Verdi's 'Otello.' His first full-length stage work, based on a Cornish legend, was staged when he was 21. Through this work, he met John Ireland, from whom he learnt a great deal. He was in poor health after being injured during the second world war, but continued to compose while also running a business growing mushrooms and carnations.
