Get away from me with your puny gongs
Article Abstract:
The New Year's Honours list gives a very interesting insight into British society. Some of those who receive an award have been fervently hoping for one for a long time, while others do not really know what to do with their award. It is quite unusual for writers to receive a state honour, even though they have a strong presence in society and make a significant contribution to the UK economy. Singers, conductors and actors frequently receive an honour, and painters and sculptors also receive an honour quite often. Writers should not really need an award, as their work will ensure that they remain in the public memory.

Time for some gay abandon
Article Abstract:
Gays in the UK are expressing their sexuality increasingly openly. In general, they are being accepted, even though there is still some localized resistance to them, particularly outside London, England. Many gays no longer feel the need to emphasize their sexuality, and this is reflected in waning support for the annual Gay Pride festival. The gay community has become fragmented, and Gay Pride itself is dividing into a number of specialized offshoots.
