In two minds, comme toujours
Article Abstract:
The key moments of French history have been brought about by left wing forces, but France remains a very conservative country, and any move towards the left has always been balanced out by a subsequent shift to the right. This looks set to be the case with the forthcoming presidential elections, with Socialist Francois Mitterrand likely to be replaced by Gaullist Jacques Chirac. This reflects the tradition of dualism which has characterised national life in France for many years.

Farmers speak up for friend in Paris
Article Abstract:
France's Gaullist presidential candidate is likely to win extensive support from the country's farmers in the forthcoming elections. He has gained a reputation for defending French farming interests extremely strongly, and has developed a strong power base in the Correze department in particular. The other presidential candidates have failed to capture the imagination of the French farming community.
