Stress and strain savage the tiddlers
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stock prices have dropped, and smaller companies have seen sharper falls in their stock prices, which peaked in May 1998, earlier than larger firms's stock prices. Lack of liquidity is one explanation for smaller firms' stocks performing less well. Manufacturers have also been affected by the high value of pound sterling, and manufacturers tend to be smaller firms. Engineers account for only 2.6% of the FTSE 100 index, while banks account for 18.78%.

Article Abstract:
It is widely recognized that stock market conditions will be very unstable in the UK in 1999. For this reason, forecasts for the level of the FTSE index at the end of 1999 vary considerably. HSBC has issued the most optimistic forecast, at 6,800 points, while Chase Manhattan is more cautious, at 5,400. Most forecasts are above 6,000, and it is widely expected that the 21st century will begin with the FTSE index at 6,250.
