Peps: decision time for the Treasury
Article Abstract:
The UK government will have to decide shortly whether to bow to pressure to reconsider its planned 50,000 pounds sterling limit on an individual's lifetime savings that can be placed in its new Individual Savings Accounts, which are to be introduced in Apr 1999. This decision will be of particular interest to holders of personal equity plans (Peps), a considerable number of whom hold more than 50,000 pounds sterling. It is now believed that Chancellor Gordon Brown may raise the limit or ring-fence existing Peps.

Why we all need tax-efficient investments
Article Abstract:
Many Britons still do not use tax-efficient savings products properly. Indeed, as a nation Britons pay 5.5 billion pounds sterling a year more in tax than they need to, the equivalent of 158 pounds sterling per person. There are now many different types of tax-free investments for savers, including Tax-Exempt Savings Schemes, Personal Equity Plans and a range of schemes run by National Savings. Pension plans are also a form of tax-free investments and savings.

Spread the risks
Article Abstract:
Distribution bonds are single premium life assurance bonds. The investment is divided into units, with the price of the units moving daily to reflect the performance of the underlying securities. Distribution bonds are less volatile than other types of managed investment. The minimum investment is generally around 5,000 pounds sterling. There are currently almost 20 different distribution bonds available, with the largest being Sun Life's bond fund.
