Bonhams the auctioneers are becoming involved in art dealing by holding cash and carry exhibitions, frowned upon by the rest of the trade. Bonhams is running an exhibition titled 'Decorative Arts Today' where there are fixed prices for items and low commissions. In 1993 Bonhams hopes to extend the same technique to selling the work of new art graduates; it is also arranging commissions for the exhibitors and only taking a 10% cut. Private buyers prefer to buy at exhibitions rather than face the uncertainty of auctions, but the scheme is not popular with the trade.

Antique dealer Christopher Gibbs of Vigo Street, London, England sets standards of taste for his customers' homes with dilapidated country house style. He forms consortiums with other dealers. He believes in the spare look with a few special objects. Many ugly things should be discarded. He likes collectors to buy personal items such as walking sticks. He tries to keep 'layers of vision' rather than recreate the past exactly. He likes beautiful, unusual things which add light and life to rooms.

UK antiques dealers are reporting strong interest from Scandivian, Japanese and American buyers in period pieces from the 1950s. These are items which can still be found very cheaply in charity shops, as many British people regard them as unfashionable. However, collectors are starting to appreciate the attractions of mass-produced design, and are willing to pay relatively high prices for ordinary household items such as ashtrays, lamps and butter dishes.
