The week John Major went nationalist
Article Abstract:
Prime minister John Major has always declared that he shares the Unionists' views on the future of Northern Ireland, but the recently published framework document indicates otherwise. The document amounts to a full scale rejection of all the principal Unionist political theories, and promotes an all-Ireland approach. This has caused uproar among Unionist leaders, but the reaction among the general Protestant community has been less extreme, with many people accepting that negotiation and compromise are necessary to ensure a lasting peace.

Will hope or cynicism triumph in this fateful week for Ulster?
Article Abstract:
Northern Ireland is enjoying its least violent time since 1969, although there is still some paramilitary violence. A new culture of dialogue has emerged in politics, and life has become easier for ordinary people. There has been agreement in many areas, even though arms decommissioning remains a point of conflict. It will require a great deal of determination, creativity and courage to break this deadlock and bring about a genuine peace agreement.

How Major stumbled into peace
Article Abstract:
UK prime minister John Major has made statements which seem to indicate that he is claiming the credit for sparking off the peace process in Northern Ireland. He is certainly committed to resolving the conflict there, but the government has often taken an uncoordinated and uncertain approach to this process. Indeed, during most of the peace process John Major did not actually believe that peace could be achieved.
